Monday Musings
December 6, 2004

I kept running into quotes last week so I decided to make this an issue of
quotes. They speak for themselves

Philadelphia Inquirer columnist: "I thought Philadelphia's plan for
municipal wireless was a bad idea. Then I heard Verizon wanted to squash
it. That gave me second thoughts."
 From Jim Baller’s list

"The Internet . . . is a true global public utility," said Jeffrey Chester,
director of the Center for Digital Democracy, an advocate for consumer
rights online.

"Google's trying to bring TV to the Web the same way they're bringing books
to the Web," according to a media executive who asked to remain anonymous.

"It's a shame we have to look to other countries to see what the future
might look like in (the) U.S.," said Terry Semel, chief executive of Yahoo.
"We are behind."
"It's not that we aren't going to participate," said Paul Otellini,
president of Intel and next in line for the CEO spot at that company. "It's
who leads. It's about jobs, government resources and our standard of living."

“The average person doesn’t understand that video is “bigger” than email
and that they need more bandwidth to handle it -- even smart people in
top management in major corporations.” Anonymous

"SBC in 2010 will be offering slower speeds than France and Japan in 2005,"
notes industry analyst Dave Burstein, who chimes in on "Project
Lightspeed", the company's effort to offer ADSL2+ to residential
users. Wall Street is apparently more impressed with Verizon, since
they'll eventually be offering fiber right to the user's door - as well as
spending $29 billion more on their next generation network.”

“Since when did a city have to ask permission from companies like Verizon -
"pretty please can we deploy our network?””

Render believes the future will look even more interesting. "New
applications that cannot run on lower bandwidth systems are emerging, and
there is a quiet race toward true convergence," he asserts.

"I know for a fact that a lot of people first heard my music by downloading
it from Napster or Kazaa," Moby wrote in his online journal last year. "And
for this reason I'll always be glad that Napster and Kazaa have existed."

“However, perhaps it's time to rethink the whole triple play concept. It's
not about "voice, video and data." That's misleading. Voice and video are
data. It's about being a connection provider, and letting the data handle
everything else.”
