Monday Musings
November 22, 2004

Supply and Demand and Policies, Oh My!

There were some great discussions last week at the One Gigabit or Bust
Roundtable in Sacramento. Here’s some of the highlights:
1) We announced the Multimedia Entertainment Network for Universities
Living Laboratory in the Entertainment Technology Task Force. This idea
was a result of their hard work over the last year which culminated in this
plan to engage industry with academia to explore options for
next-generation entertainment via 100MB or greater connections.
2) The GIS Fiber Mapping Task Force finalized the plans for the Hot
Communities Map which will be online for submissions by next month. More
info as it becomes available will be mused.
3) The Wireless Task Force announced that we’ve received National Science
Foundation funding for a workshop to discuss how wireless can meet our 1GB
needs by 2010.
4) We talked about the action plan – what should be included and how to
structure the information. More to come on this in the next month. One of
the big goals of the group is to get the Governor’s endorsement and
encourage the State to start looking at public policies that will help
drive one gigabit by 2010.
5) Ubiquitous Media BOF talked about new exciting projects between SF State
and Fuji Xerox. Stay tuned to the University Applications mailing list for
more info.
6) The Museum Education Task Force started planning for a new collaboration
among university libraries and public libraries.
7) The California State Parks have tons of online content available. Some
may be used as a demonstration of gigabit capabilities in high schools in
conjunction with the Latino Education Task Force.

Lots more happened. Check it all out on the web at

Broadband a HIGH Priority

I gave a brief presentation last week at the California State Association
of Counties’ Economic Development Committee. One county supervisor told a
story about how a small gaming company left their county (to the tune of
$150M in annual revenues) because they couldn’t get broadband. The
committee discussed how to make broadband a priority for next year.

Big Broadband, Everywhere!

As Brad Kane said to me today, it’s not about the what, it’s about the WHY.

Have a great Thanksgiving (and if you are from a country that doesn’t do
Thanksgiving, give thanks on Thursday anyway!)

Susan
