i think i am supposed to query the hpr tac to get "official" targets from
UCs and independents. Jim, is your target list "official" enough that
i should use it as a starting point and ask campuses to update the
info if they wish, or should i just start from scratch?
i also was supposed to check with Michael Sinatra about using ucb's
smokeping setup for our pilot test. Michael is less than thrilled.
he appears to give it a higher score on the production scale than
i suggested during the call. his concern is that loading a bunch
of targets onto berkeley's server will cause the precision of all
the rtt measurements to go down, introducing noise into the graphs
and reducing the utility as a production monitoring system. (note
that i said "precision" and not "accuracy"; i am being very careful
to distinguish between the two.) since Michael "owns" the system
and operates if for ucb, i have to respect his opinion. we need
to look for a different server for the pilot, or discuss ways to
distribute the targets over multiple servers for the pilot.
thanks,
ken
