The following is a summary of what I think we concluded at the HPR TAC with
regard to the Measurement Tools and Reporting Initiative:
1) Latency, loss, utilization, and change in those over time were the metrics
to focus on.
2) Our scope of measurement is to every UC campus, CSU campus, CC campus,
Independent institution, and K12 node site.
3) We are interested in providing at least one user available tools such as
NDT.
4) For latency and loss measurements we need to standardize the ping device.
5) An implementation that will exclude the use of flow capture and analysis
should be avoided even though flow capture and analysis will not be part of
the scope at this time.
6) CENIC has an open ticket to get multicast and broadcast packet rates added
to cricket.cenic.org
7) It was felt that reporting for QoS or other speccfic types of traffic
should be either a future part of this project or another project entirely.
Action items:
1) We need to identify and test a consistent pingable device to be used at
all locations that will be part of latency and loss measurements.
2) We need to clarify if any automated reports will be generated as a result
of the initiative and if so for whom and what those should look like.
3) We are probably ready to return to the tools list and select/test our
tools.
